Some of the dialogue is a bit iffy, there are a few too many superfluous characters (mostly in the Crimson Guard) and I find Sydney’s take on what constitutes morality far too simplistic. I don’t consider the plot of Vagrant Story to be a perfect masterpiece. The story is incredibly dense and confusing, but no-one acts sporadically or inconsistently - and the tone signalled by the haunting music persists throughout the entire game. This includes the player character, Ashley - he has a troubled past, and doesn’t know the right thing to do. These characters are all deeply flawed individuals - some brutal, some cruel, some petty. The drama is all organically driven by the character’s conflict with one another. And I have severe problems with the main plot of Cave Story - It wavers drunkenly between cuteness and tragedy, and left me not caring about it one whit.īut with Vagrant Story, it's different. Policenauts, for all its excellent explanations of technology, unravels at the seams when considering social or political implications. When I’ve written about other game’s stories, they’re usually framed as criticisms. Almost all of the plot is told through natural dialogue between characters, and it feels like you’re watching an elaborate Shakespearian play. It drops you into the middle of a confusing, multi-factional conflict, with secret alliances and betrayals, and expects you to keep up. ![]() Vagrant Story uses one of my favourite techniques of storytelling - it features a complete lack of exposition. Having said that, if you use Staves, they will dramatically increase your INT, making your magic more powerful, so if that's the way you wanna go it's up to you. This article contains extensive SPOILERS for the entirety of Vagrant Story. obviously buffs/recovery spells are a must however.Įven on the single-elemental bosses, it's much more effective to have a well matched weapon/gems/accessories, a relevant Fusion spell, and go hard on the chaining - than it is to attack them with magic on their elemental weakness. stick to equipping weapons/gems with the best affinity for the situation and you'll almost never need to use magic attacks. i only ever really used Spirit Surge to attack undead types and that was mostly cause i was bored of physical attacks with my Silver dagger, so it's good to just mix it up a little bit. Obviously all this talk about chaining is useless if you don't optimize your weaponsĪnd yes personally i very much agree that offensive magic in this game is shit. alternatively look up the bosses CEV stats. if you find it impossible to chain on a boss, it is probably worth hitting another body part to increase the chance of chaining and actually causing damage. You'll miss every shot in the chain, that's just the battle design.īe aware that different body parts have different probabilities to evade chain attacks specifically. you don't need to go for 20+ chains lol, the RISK cost is too high.Ī quick tip would be: if you miss or do 0 damage on your first hit, do not waste your time/RISK trying to continue the chain. People are recommending chaining and I would have to agree, a mastery of chaining to the point of producing 8 chains, reliably and consistently, is more than enough to get you through pretty much any boss. One miss and your RISK goes up by 50?! Are you sure about that? I just finished the game recently and that was definitely not the case for me. ![]()
